The Berlin International Film Festival
and
The Bangkok International Film Festival - February, 2006

In February 2006, Asano visited Germany to join the Berlin International Film Festival with Pen-ek Ratanaruang, whose upcoming film "INVISIBLE WAVES" is competing, and he met Christopher Doyle (director of photography), Prabda Yoon (writer) and Ken Mitsuishi there. After the Berlin IFF, they went to Thailand to take part in the Bangkok International Film Festival.
Asano enjoyed the warmth of thailand after Berlin.

12th Feb., As soon as he arrived at the hotel in Berlin, he went to two parties, the film festival official party and a party hosted by Fortissimo.
13th, He was interviewed by several journalists early in the morning.

  14th morning, He had a photo shoot at the Hyatt Hotel with Pen-ek, Chris, Prabda and Mitsuishi-san who he co-starred with in "INVISIBLE WAVES" .

After the photo shoot, he had a press conference. During the conference, he took a picture with his digital camera.
 

After lunch, he had another interview for a TV program, and then went to Berlinale Palast, the main venue of the film festival.

  In Berlinale Palast, there were many autographed photographs of actors, actresses and directors from all around the world.
 
All the guys looked gorgeous in their suits.
After the official screening, a big dinner and an endless party waited for them.
Next day, 15th, Asano had countless interviews for 5 solid hours, and then on the 16th, he left for his next trip to Bangkok.
  17th, He joined the Bangkok Film Festival that was held in Siam Paragon which is the new, huge shopping complex at Siam Square.
"INVISIBLE WAVES" was the openning movie!

The 58th Cannes Film Festival -2005

17th May.
Asano joined a press conference and a photo session for director Sergei Bodrov's upcoming movie, MONGOL.
MONGOL is a film about the early life of Genghis Khan. Asano will play the young Genghis Khan -Temudzhin.

18th May
ELI, ELI, LEMA SABACHTHANI?, directed byShinji Aoyama, was screened at Salle Debussy.

The 55th Berlin Film Festival -2005

Asano visited Berlin to join the Berlinale Talent Campus #3. The Talent Campus is as an intensive academy which challenges and supports young film talent. Creative professionals from every field of the film industry are invited to be speakers and partners for discussion.
Asano was invited to give a lecture after a screening of TORI, which is Asano's first film as a director. It is an omnibus made up of five short films. The film distributor and Japan specialist Stephan Holl interviewed him.

The 61the Venice Film Festival -2004

9th September
Asano joined a photo session for Shinya Tsukamoto's film, VITAL.
After the screening at Palagalileo, most of the audience stood up and applauded. KIKI and Asano were asked for their autograph and photos by fans.

10th September
KOHI JIKO aka CAFE LUMIERE, directed by Hou Hsiao Hsien, was shown. Hou Hsiao Hsien, You Hitoto and Asano were asked for many interviews by local magazines and TV.




The 57th Cannes Film Festival -2004
Asano joined the Cannes film festival again. CHA NO AJI aka THE TASTE OF TEA, directed by Katsuhito Ishii, was well received by the media, especially the local French press, and of course the audience. So Dir.Ishii and Asano had countless interviews during their stay in Cannes. After an official screening, they had a curtain call twice. That was an unusual thing on the blue carpet!

The 36th Sitges Catalonia International Film Festival -2003
Asano joined Sitges Catalonia international film festival in Spain. During his stay, Asano had many interviews and press meetings.
AKARUI MIRAI aka BRIGHT FUTURE, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, was screened on 4th December. The next day dir.Takeshi Kitano's ZATOICHI was shown. Both were highly praised!

The 60th Venice Film Festival -2003

Asano visited Italy to join the Venice International Film Festival.
Pen-ek Ratanaruang's "LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE" and Takeshi Kitano's "ZATOICHI" were screened.
Unfortunatelly, Asano had to return to Japan before Zatoichi's screening. So he could not meet Dir. Kitano.
But he really enjoyed Venice with Pen-ek and Christopher Doyle.

And,
Asano won the Upstream Prize for Best actor in a leading role in "LAST LIFE"!!
He heard the exciting news on the phone in Japan.

The 56th Cannes Film Festival -2003

20th May
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's BRIGHT FUTURE was shown at LUMIERE.
Dir.Kurosawa and Tatsuya Fuji, Joe Odagiri and Asano had been interviewed by several journalists from early in the morning.
Walking on the red carpet is very exciting.
